Suppliers ask to be paid outside Alibaba for a reason that is sometimes innocent (fees, a better rate, an existing relationship) and sometimes not. Either way, the moment you wire a deposit to an account you cannot verify, Trade Assurance is gone and you are lending money to a factory you have never seen. You have three realistic options, and only one of them keeps you from going first.
The three options
Stay inside Alibaba
Refuse to pay outside and keep Trade Assurance. The safest if the supplier agrees; many will, if you insist.
Wire the deposit anyway
Only with a supplier you have already received goods from, for an amount you can afford to lose. Do not do it with a new supplier, whatever the discount.
Escrow with milestones, paid in USDT
If the supplier accepts crypto, which cross-border suppliers increasingly do, you fund the whole order into escrow once and release each stage (production started, inspection passed, shipped with documents) when it is met. The supplier sees the money is there; you keep the leverage you would have lost with the wire.
How the escrow route works, concretely
- 1Agree the stages in writing: 30% on production start, 40% on a passed pre-shipment inspection, 30% on bill of lading, for example.
- 2Open a Business Escrow room with the supplier and fund the full amount in USDT. Until this moment, nothing has left your hands.
- 3Release each milestone against its evidence (inspection report, shipping documents). If the supplier changes the terms mid-order, you do not have to accept: the funded terms are the terms.
- 4If something goes wrong, open a dispute; an arbiter decides on the documents.
What escrow does not fix: a supplier that does not accept crypto, or goods that match the description but not your expectations. Write the description as if a stranger will judge it, because one will.
