❓ Before you trade

The buyer overpaid and wants the difference back. What should I do?

Never send the difference in crypto. The overpayment scam depends on you refunding real money against a payment that will be reversed or was never yours.

The buyer "accidentally" sent more than agreed and asks you to send the extra back, usually in crypto and usually with some urgency. This is one of the oldest scams there is: the original payment is reversed later, was made with stolen funds, or was never for the amount shown, and the "refund" is the only real money that moved. Do not send anything back.

What to do instead

  1. 1Do not confirm the trade on the basis of the overpayment. On iEscrow each trade has an exact, unique amount; a payment for a different figure is not that trade’s payment.
  2. 2Open a dispute and state it: the amount received does not match. The crypto stays in escrow; nobody releases anything on a mismatch.
  3. 3If the money is genuinely in your account and genuinely from the buyer, the difference is a bank matter between you and them, through the bank, after the facts are clear. Never through a crypto transfer, never the same day, never under pressure.
  4. 4If the overpayment came from a different name than the buyer, treat it as a third-party payment: see The money came from a different name than the buyer.

Why the exact amount protects you

The amount is the key that ties a payment to a trade. When it matches, the payment is identified. When it does not, the mismatch itself is the evidence, and the arbiter sees the agreed amount and the received amount side by side. An overpayment is not a bonus; it is a payment that does not fit.

"I sent extra by mistake, please return it in USDT right now" is the script. The urgency is the tell.
